CINEMA
LOG

Every frame is a thought. Every cut is a decision. I watch films the way I read code — searching for the system underneath.

CINEMATOGRAPHY NOTES

01
THE RULE OF THIRDS IS A LIE

Every great cinematographer breaks it intentionally. The rule exists so you can understand what you're violating. Kubrick's symmetry, Wong Kar-wai's dead space — both are deliberate rule-breaking in service of emotion.

LIGHT IS CHARACTER

In Blade Runner 2049, the orange wasteland isn't a location — it's emotional state. Roger Deakins uses light not to illuminate scenes but to define who characters are in that moment. Color temperature is psychology.

THE CUT IS THE THOUGHT

Walter Murch said a cut is like a blink — it marks the shift in thought. Every edit is a statement about what matters. Writing code taught me the same thing: every function call is a decision about what to expose and what to hide.

SILENCE IS THE LOUDEST SOUND

The best sound design uses absence. The ear fills in what the speaker leaves out. I've started applying this to UI design — the negative space around an element is part of the element. What you don't show is as important as what you do.

ONE SHOT = ONE IDEA

A shot that tries to do too many things communicates nothing. Same with a function. Same with a landing page section. Constraint is clarity. The best shots in cinema are surgically specific — they have exactly one job and they do it completely.

CINEMA IS SYSTEMS THINKING

A film is a system of systems. Script → performance → camera → light → sound → edit → score → color grade. Each layer transforms what came before. It's why I became a better engineer after studying film: I started seeing my codebase the same way.
